The esteemed guest speaker for the 2014 RJR Sports Foundation, National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award is the former multi-sport athlete, professional footballer, football coach and renowned speaker on Corporate Governance, Bancroft S. Gordon.
Mr. Gordon, a lawyer, is a graduate of Excelsior High School, EXED Community College, Howard University and the world famous Harvard Law School. He is currently employed by the Fortune 500 Corporation, Marriott International Inc. as its vice president, assistant general counsel and corporate secretary.
Mr. Gordon represented Excelsior High School in five sports: football (captain), field hockey (captain), basketball (vice captain), track (1500 metres), and cricket (pace bowler/batsman). He was an invitee to the Jamaica Teams for football, basketball and field hockey but decied to focus on football.
He was the inaugural KSAFA Major League Player of the Year in 1978, during which season he scored 13 goals a a midfielder, and represented Jamaica at football from 1976-79. He captained the Major League Club, Shortwood United, and was an NCAA All-American in football while at Howard in 1982 and received an NCCA post-graduate scholarship, which he used to persue his law degree at Harvard Law School.
Mr. Gordon played professional soccer for 2 years in the US. He also represented and currently manages and coaches, the hugely popular amateur team, Jamaica Nats, which comprises former Jamaica national players who received scholarships to American universities.
He remains loosely involved with the Jamaica national programme by providing assistance to the Natoanl team and various club teams on their visits to the US.
Bancroft Gordon has two sons: Djalma and Roland, and two daughters: Jacquine and McKenzie.
